Oast Houses (Hop Kilns), Yalding
Although not exclusive to Kent, one of the great sights of Kent rural life are the Oast Houses. Built originally for kilning (drying) hops as part of the brewing process - Kent being a large hop-growing and beer brewing county, many have now been converted to homes as kilning has become more industrialised.
These Oast Houses are located in Yalding.
The most fascinating bits of these houses, for me, are the 'Cowls' on the roof. Designed to let rising heat pass through and escape, they turned with the wind.
